#9- Write then Eat

by- Tom Kubrak

When you go into a writing session, it’s imperative to have your mind clear so you can focus on the task at hand… to write that day.

Now, how do you do that?

9.1 Don’t Eat Late into The Night

I used to eat at ungodly hours. Sometimes, I still fall short, but this is what I strive to have dinner at a reasonable time and then, if I do, only have a light snack a few hours before bed. In the past, I would go to bed with either a full stomach or partially full. Both, I’ve learned, after many years of trial and error, doesn’t work, if I want to write in the morning into the early afternoon. I’ve found writing in the morning works best for me in how I operate.
This might sound silly for those of you who haven’t struggled with food, but for any of you writers out there who do, like me, you know the struggle.
I’ve struggled with this for a while, and still do, but on the days, I eat dinner at a normal time and then wake up right away, I feel I have more energy to do the writing I need to do that day. For example, if I’m waking up at 8 am, and need 8 hours of sleep, I’m going to stop eating at least 3 hours before going to bed. So, that would be 9pm I would stop eating.
It’s even better to stop eating before that, but that would be the cut-off time.

9.2 Write First and Then Eat

I now write shortly after waking up. Once I complete around an hour morning-routine, I dig into my writing for the day, accompanied by a delicious cup of coffee or tea. I’ve found this works for me greatly and it allows me to write longer pieces. Before I only could write in short bursts.
This may be a little extreme, but my love of food is like a shark who gets a taste for blood. Once I start eating, it’s hard to stop or control the amount I intake.
If you’re anything like me, and you’ve been wondering why your writing has not been at its best, then try this. It may help you like it’s done for me.

Write on writers and remember… eat after.
